Dice rolling

Dice rolling is the most used feature in Fabled. You can roll from the dice buttons at the table, type a roll in the chat, or press a button on a character sheet. All of them land in the same campaign chat.

Rolling from the dice buttons

The table has a button for each die type. Click a button to add one die to your roll. Shift+click adds ten. Right-click a button to clear that die type, and Shift+right-click removes ten. When your dice are chosen, roll them.

Right-click a roll button or a die to choose who sees the roll. For a roll that uses a single d20 you can also choose Advantage or Disadvantage there.

A dice-set picker beside the buttons chooses which of your dice sets the roll uses. See Cosmetics.

Typing a roll

For a custom expression, type /roll in the chat, for example /roll 2d6. The expression follows the notation tabletop players know:

  • 1d20: one twenty-sided die.
  • 4d6kh3: four six-siders, keep the highest three.
  • 2d20kh1+5: two d20s, keep the highest, add 5. This is an advantage roll written out.
  • 2d20kl1+5: keep the lowest. This is a disadvantage roll.
  • 4d6dl1: four six-siders, drop the lowest.
  • 10d6!: ten six-siders, exploding. Any 6 rolls again and adds.

Sheet buttons

A character sheet can have buttons that roll for you, such as an attack, a save or a skill check. The framework behind the sheet decides the expression and the modifiers, so you do not need to remember them.

A button can also do more than roll. An action such as a spell can change values on the sheet. Those changes appear in the element's Ledger tab, while the roll itself stays in the chat. See The ledger.

Who sees a roll

Any member can choose who sees their roll:

  • Roll to Self: only you.
  • Roll to Self + GM: you and the GM.
  • Roll to All: everyone at the table.

If you do not choose, a roll goes to everyone. You can set your own default under My default roll audience in the board settings. Each roll in the chat shows a chip saying who can see it: Only you, You & the GM, or Everyone.

Where rolls show up

Rolls appear in the campaign chat, in the order they happened. You see the rolls you have permission to see. The chat belongs to the campaign, so it carries across the campaign's sessions.

Roll requests

GMs can ask several elements to roll at once from the Element Manager. Click elements to cycle Select, Advantage, Disadvantage and Deselect, then choose the roll type. Players who control the chosen elements get a prompt to roll. Elements that cannot make that roll are skipped.

Where to go from here

  • To walk through rolling in a live session, follow Roll dice in a session.
  • To wire rolls into a homebrew framework, see the functions reference and its dice functions.
