GM and player roles
Every campaign has at least one Game Master and a roster of players. The GM who created the campaign is its owner. Any member can be made a GM, and a GM can be made a player again.
The role belongs to the campaign membership, not to your account. You can be the GM in one campaign and a player in another.
The campaign owner
The GM who created the campaign is its owner. Only the owner can archive the campaign. The owner cannot leave it, be removed from it or be made a player, so a campaign always has someone who can manage it. Archiving moves the campaign out of the active list until you restore it. See Campaigns and sessions.
Changing roles
Open the campaign's Members list. For a player, choose Make Game Master and confirm. For another GM, choose Make Player. If you are a GM who is not the owner, you can choose Step down as Game Master for yourself. A promoted GM has the full GM toolkit for the campaign.
What the GM does
- Runs the table. The GM controls the scene: maps, tokens, fog of war and the Element Manager.
- Sees everything in a scene, including hidden elements. Players see only the visible elements they can access.
- Shares content with players and sets who can see or change each item. See Permissions. A campaign's GMs always have full access to its content.
- Requests rolls from several elements at once. See Dice rolling.
What players do
- Play their own characters and use the content the GM has shared with them.
- Use the chat and the rolls they have permission to see.
- Choose who sees their own rolls: only themselves, themselves and the GM, or everyone.
- See the part of the map the GM's fog of war allows.
What players cannot see
- Fog of war. GMs see through fog. Players see only the areas that are revealed.
- Enemy health. By default, players cannot see the health of tokens they do not own. The GM can change this for a single token with Hide health from players, or for the whole campaign with Hide enemy health from players by default.
- Private rolls. A roll sent to self or to self and the GM is hidden from the other players. This applies to any member's rolls, not only the GM's.
- Content set to None. Content the GM has not shared does not appear to the player at all. See Permissions.
