Your Convention Season Survival Kit

Picture a fluorescent ballroom, forty folding tables, and the low roar of two hundred people rolling dice at once. Somewhere in that noise is the best game you will play all year. Con season is here, and it rewards the players who show up ready.

You do not need to be a tournament grinder to have a great weekend. You need a light plan, a little stamina, and a handful of small habits that keep the fun from curdling into a headache by hour three. Here is the kit.

Pack Smart, Not Heavy

The floor punishes overpacking. You will carry that bag up three flights and around a dealer hall six times, so every item has to earn its spot. Aim for one shoulder bag you can forget about.

  • Dice you actually trust, plus a spare set to lend a stranger
  • Printed sheets or a charged tablet, whichever fails you less under pressure
  • A refillable water bottle and a couple of real snacks (protein, not just sugar)
  • A small power bank, two pencils, and a pen that will not die mid-combat
  • Earplugs or loops for when the room hits full volume

That is it. If you find yourself packing a third bag of miniatures for a four-hour one-shot, put it back.

Run a Four-Hour Slot Without Burning Out

A convention block is not your home campaign. Strangers, a hard stop, and one shot to land the experience. The trick is structure you can lean on when your brain is fried from three games in a row.

  1. First fifteen minutes: names, safety tools, and pregens in hands. No lore dump yet.
  2. Open with a punch. Drop them into a scene with a decision to make, not a tavern.
  3. Hit the midpoint reveal with about ninety minutes left so the finale has room to breathe.
  4. Watch the clock and give a real ending. A rushed climax lands better than none at all.

Give yourself the full gap between slots too. Eat, walk outside, reset. A tired GM running back to back with no break is how a great table turns flat.

Find Your People Between the Tables

The games are the reason you came. The people are the reason you come back. Some of the best friendships in this hobby start with a shared groan when the dice betray someone at table nine.

Say yes to the pickup game. Linger after your slot to talk shop. Compliment a stranger's homebrew and ask how they built it. Con friends are the ones who remember your barbarian a year later and ask what she is up to now.

The players who have the most fun are almost never the ones carrying the heaviest bag.

Guard Your Energy on the Floor

Conventions are a stamina sport dressed up as a party. The wall arrives fast: dehydration, skipped meals, and six hours of adrenaline stack up before you notice. A little maintenance keeps you in the good part of the weekend.

  • Drink water on a timer, not when you finally feel thirsty
  • Sit down and eat one real meal a day, away from a table
  • Take the quiet room seriously when the noise gets to be too much
  • Protect your sleep, because tomorrow's slots deserve a rested you

None of this is glamorous. All of it is the difference between limping to Sunday and closing the con out strong.

Bring Something of Your Own

Here is the quiet upgrade: show up with a one-shot you built yourself. There is nothing like watching four strangers fall in love with a world that lives in your head, then trade contact info before they leave.

If you want to sketch that adventure before the drive out, The Forge is a good place to shape it into something table-ready. Then go claim your slot, meet your people, and make the kind of story folks are still retelling next summer.
